Stamford was designated as England’s first Conservation Town in 1967. This confirmed recognition of the town’s qualities over several centuries.
This web site was developed as part of Stamford Civic Society's festival celebrating 40 years of Stamford's conservation status.
Stamford Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1983 by Jeremy Pike. Its players are drawn mostly from Stamford, Oakham and surrounding areas. The orchestra has developed a reputation for providing high quality performances of classical music for people in and around Stamford, performing three concerts a year.
Stamford Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Christopher Brown, who studied at Cambridge where he was a choral scholar at King's College. He later studied with Lennox Berkeley at the Royal College of Music and with Boris Blacher in Berlin. Christopher Brown has been a much sought-after composition teacher at the Royal Academy of Music since 1969, and has been active as a conductor since the mid 70's.
The Burghley Singers are a Stamford-based choir founded by the late Harold Harvey and meet weekly on Wednesdays to rehearse. They are a relatively small group with a 'everyone a soloist' feel to them.
Woven Chords is a mixed choir from Stamford who sing unaccompanied harmony songs from across the globe. Celebrating the richness and variety of the human voice, Woven Chords’ acappella singing gives expression to sumptuous harmonies from many different cultural traditions.
The Stamford Endowed Schools is proud to be a part of the town's conservation celebrations. We will be making up part of the musical programme for April 28th 2007, when some of our students perform solos.
