Stamford was designated as England’s first Conservation Town in 1967. This confirmed recognition of the town’s qualities over several centuries.
- In the late 17th Century, the traveller Celia Fiennes, said Stamford is 'as fine a built town all of stone as may be seen'.
- Sir Walter Scott claimed the view up to St Mary’s Church was ‘the finest sight on the road between London and Edinburgh’.
- John Betjeman called Stamford 'England's most attractive town'.
- Nicholas Pevsner said: ‘Stamford is the English country market town par excellence'.
